C4K

Fall has already been super busy for Maker VISTA members Blair McAvoy and Brandon Jackson at Computers4Kids (C4K) in Charlottesville, VA. After spearheading a major (and impressive!) overhaul of the clubhouse’s organizational system for tools and materials over the summer, Blair spent much of September and early October shifting gears from workspace to showcase, designing a workshop intended to meaningfully integrate the use of portfolios. Blair identified a group of adult mentors as a pilot focus group, that will strive to find organic, intentional, and goal-oriented ways to posit portfolio building as a tool for skill building and sharing project work for youth members.

Meanwhile, Maker VISTA member Brandon devoted his first several weeks of service to editing a documentary that captures C4K youth members’ experiences during a summer camp program at Wildrock in Crozet, VA. With a focus on play, space, and exploration, C4K youth were able to look deeper into themselves and their roles in society, to uncover the stories of the land and share their own personal journeys of self-discovery – which were then shared via the documentary video at a special screening event on September 29th. Brandon’s editing and production experience was a clutch capacity booster for this passion project!

Check back next month to read about another upcoming C4K project: a youth member-created haunted smart house!
