2016 Season

For 2016, Maker Ed will be taking a small step back from facilitating a live season in the Bay Area. While we absolutely love interacting with Young Makers and mentors, as well as hosting events and opportunities that allow you to share your ideas and progress, we plan to dedicate our focus to designing and creating strong mentor workshops for maker clubs nationwide. We know how critical mentors are, and we want to support mentors in better, more impactful ways. We are also facilitating new partnerships to bring Young Makers to your local community!

Young Makers will still have the opportunity to exhibit their work for 2 to 4 hour windows at Maker Faire Bay Area and we hope that you will participate once again! You may apply below to register your project and exhibition requirements. Submissions are due Friday, April 15th and confirmations will be sent out by May 1st. This year’s Maker Faire Bay Area will take place from Friday, May 20th to Sunday, May 22nd at the San Mateo Event Center.

In the summer, new & improved online resources will be launched to help you brainstorm project ideas, get started with your maker club, and involve your community. Keep an eye out! You can also check out our final 2015 program evaluation.

In the meantime, we hope you dig into your recycling bin, pull out those dusty tools and materials, and start making again! To inspire and spark ideas, here are some wonderful opportunities to keep you going:

  • The Resilience Challenge! Learn more about this Bay Area 10-week social impact competition that teaches participants to use design and technology to develop original solutions to civic issues at trchallenge.com.
  • Maker Camp! Maker Media’s Maker Camp is a free online community for kids, filled with youth makers and sure-fire project ideas. Check it out at makercamp.com.
  • Infy Maker Awards! Youth are invited to submit their projects and will be eligible to receive a $1,000 award and also a $10,000 grant, that would go to a school or organization in their community to create a makerspace. More information at http://www.infymakers.com. The winter cycle deadline is Feb 1, 2016.

If you’re interested in partnerships or collaborations, please feel free to reach out to youngmakers@makered.org.
