EL Furioso Electrico
Makers: Junior Soto, Kevin Barrios
Mentors: K.O
Club: Lighthouse Community Charter School
Website: http://lighthousecharter.org/
Exhibiting outside the Young Makers area.. The idea of making an electric Go Kart goes back to when Kevin and I went to Boomers in eighth grade and we rode the Go Karts in the amusement park. We said that one day we were going to build a working Go Kart out of scratch and this year we were given the opportunity to create a running Go Kart. For a few weeks, we researched various possible shapes and forms the Go Kart could have looked like. We discussed making it a four wheeler, other times making it have three wheels etc. With the help of our mentor, who helped us facilitate the project with wheelchair motors, we were able to see how fast we wanted the Go Kart to travel and how heavy it would be. One Saturday, we traveled with our Robotics teacher to an electric wheel convention and the guys at the shop there gave us a free Go Kart frame that we could use. From there, our task has been to sand it down and apply a liquid that will take all of the rust away. Next, we have to weld the front part of the Go Kart, so we could flip the back wheel backwards and have the passenger driving with the front two wheels. Eventually the Go Kart will be black, have one passenger which will be the driver, and drive with two motors. In order to charge the Go Kart, there will be a solar panel station where we will take it and connect it and charge it. We calculate a top speed of 15-20 miles per hour.

Club: Willow Glen Makers
Website: http://www.willowglenmakers.org/
Exhibiting outside the Young Makers area.Flow•26 is a life-size version of the app Flow Free. It is a puzzle game where players will have to work together in order to connect their circles while filling up the whole board. They will have to accomplish this while not crossing each other’s paths. The Modular Guitar
Makers: Q.V. Huynh, Mathew Gery
Mentors: Hannah, Lora A. Gery
Club:
Website: http://qvguitar.blogspot.com
Exhibiting in the Young Makers area: Saturday, May 18, 10 am – 2 pmWhat’s the next revolutionary design of the electric guitar? I think I got it! The world of Electric Guitars as we know it today, has not changed for decades. Guitars in stores today sell overpriced guitars that look nearly identical to the next! I set out to change that by introducing a customizable electric guitar that can easily be switched around to create new tones and looks rivaling that of a more expensve guitar. Imagine being able to switch out for new pickups(microphones) to alter the sound just by snapping in a module in under a minute! Even better yet, imagine being able to carry around five different guitar tones in just one backpack. Or bring five different guitar body styles in a small suitcase. The Modular Guitar design allows you to litterally snap together your dream guitar in minutes. You will have the ability to upgrade your guitar over time, ultimately saving you a lot of money. Need a double neck guitar? Check.

Exhibiting outside the Young Makers area. The point of creating our robot is to allow individuals to interact with it. Last year we made an arduino drum kit, which was popular, mainly because it was interactive. People seemed to enjoy interactive projects and we plan to build on that.

Exhibiting in the Young Makers area: Sunday, May 19, 10 am – 12 pmA series of sound-activated programmable LED arrays based upon WS2801 chip and the Arduino microcontroller. Project is a mashup of several Adafruit projects, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Exhibiting outside the Young Makers area. The W.M.B.D. is split into two stages. The first is the filling/sealing stage which takes water balloons (mounted onto clips) and then fills them to a specific – configurable – size before “tying” them by spinning them shut. After they have been sealed, the water balloons are sent to the second stage (the launcher), where they are thrown a short distance to a target. Because it was not an original design priority, the launcher is not currently as far along as the rest of the system. However, at the moment our plan is to use a pneumatic piston run off of an air compressor and powered by solenoid valve to provide the push for a simple funnel launcher. The entire system is controlled by Arduino with a combination of touch and IR sensors providing the feedback. We are using a small “battleship pump” (I’m really not sure what else to call it; we are currently borrowing it from one of the Western Warship Combat Club ships). The water balloons are spun by a shallow bowl (into which they fill) that is attached to a small DC motor which the Arduino controlled by way of a relay. The water balloons are pushed from one part of the system to another by servo arms. Though we expect the system to operate primarily without human intervention (except for switching out the clips), we also hope to have an overridable control box so that people can get a chance to interact with and control parts of the system.
We intend to bring the entire assembly to Maker Faire along with a target and piping so that we can make the water as much of a closed-circuit as possible. With that said, access to a hose would be very useful (if not absolutely essential).
