The Thinkery is excited to host two Maker Corps Members this summer. The Thinkery is an evolution of the Austin Children’s Museum that just opened in December 2013. Our mission is to create innovative learning experiences that equip and inspire the next generation of creative problem solvers. The Thinkery is a place where visitors connect with ideas by doing, making, and experiencing.
The Thinkery’s signature exhibit spaces, Innovators’ Workshop and Spark Shop focus on making, invention, and inquiry and feature a changing mix of hands on science, engineering, and art activities. The Thinkery’s Kitchen Lab is part traditional kitchen part science lab; here visitors explore chemistry experiments, cook tasty recipes, and make messy concoctions. Maker Corps Members will have opportunities to support programs in Innovators’ Workshop, Spark Shop, Kitchen Lab and the Thinkery’s other unique exhibits.
Maker Corps Members posted at the Thinkery will work closely with our Education Team and will assist with developing Maker programs including daily activities, workshops, and camps. They will work with a dynamic staff and receive training on how to facilitate and engage visitors through a variety of maker activities. From soldering and robotics, to sewing and screenprinting, to woodworking and 3D printing, we’re excited to highlight the wide world of making and invite everyone to make!
Thanks to the generous support of Cognizant’s Making the Future initiative, this year’s Maker Corps Members will have a unique opportunity to help develop the Thinkery’s first Maker after-school program, Spark Club. Through out the summer, we will be developing, piloting, and refining activities that will be rolled out during the school year. Maker Corps Members will work closely with participants in the Thinkery’s Teen Volunteer Program to try out new projects, learn by making, and test out new equipment.
The Thinkery invites Maker Corps Members to spend their summer with us in sunny Austin, Texas. In exchange for your hard work and passion we’ll provide leadership training, facilitation experience, all the making, creating, and tinkering you want, along with a generous dose of Tex-Mex, BBQ, and rock and roll.
Maker Ed is thrilled to welcome the Thinkery as a new Maker Corps Host Site for 2014. Applications for all Maker Corps Members will open Monday, February 3, and close on March 21. Click here for more information, and to apply. – Steve
