Open Portfolio Workshop, Fall 2016

On November 15-16, 2016, Maker Ed – in collaboration with the Remake Learning Network and IDeATe at Carnegie Mellon University – will host the Open Portfolio Workshop in Pittsburgh, PA.

The deadline for applications has passed, but if you have any questions, please direct them to opp@makered.org.

DHF portfolio postThis 2-day hands-on workshop will provide educators and practitioners the opportunity to practice techniques for capturing learning through portfolios, think through approaches to implementation, and bring lessons learned back to their educational settings. The workshop, based off of findings from our Open Portfolio Project, is geared towards practitioners in both formal and informal learning environments. Administrators interested in learning more about portfolios and their value are also welcome. All participants must apply and be accepted to attend.

While we consider portfolios important for a wide variety of purposes — whether significant for personal use and self-reflection, for college admissions or career pathways, for capturing and sharing work with diverse audinces —  this particular workshop in Pittsburgh will frame portfolios for the intention of college and career access.

Event Details

The workshop will take place 9am to about 5pm on Tuesday, Nov 15 and from 9am to 1:30pm on Wednesday, Nov 16. In the afternoon on Wednesday from 2pm to about 5pm, we will also have opportunities for visits and tours to maker education programs and spaces in the Remake Learning Network in the Pittsburgh area!

Topics covered throughout the workshop include, but are not limited to, facilitation practices and prompts, integration, platforms and tools, assessment, and examples of youth portfolios. Stay tuned for the agenda in the upcoming weeks!

In conjunction with the west coast Open Portfolio Workshop that we hosted in Feb 2016 in California, along with the research that we are currently immersed in, we designed and wrote a Practical Guide to Open Portfolios. This will be a free resource available to you all, and we hope it serves as a reference point for you and our ongoing conversations and work. We anticipate that this is version 1, and we plan for an updated guide, released with new insights in late 2017.

Costs & Travel Information

Maker Ed is delighted to offer this workshop for free for all accepted participants! AND for those who are coming from outside of the area, we will be able to cover the full costs of 2 nights’ accommodations (nights of Nov 14 and Nov 15) near the workshop location in Pittsburgh, PA. Participants will be expected to take care of their own flight and/or ground transportation costs.

Breakfast and lunch will be served and included during both days of the workshop. More details on accommodations, locations, and logistics will be provided upon acceptance.
