Engage

tinkeringTo read about tinkering feels counterintuitive since it is based on play, discovery, inquiry, exploration, and iteration, and in the effort of making something you want to make.

So, stop reading (at the end of this paragraph!) and find something to tinker with–pick something completely random and spend 10 minutes (time yourself!) tinkering with it, trying to get to know this thing in a new or different way.

After your ten minutes, read the tinkering section in the Youth Makerspace Playbook and see how many of The Art of Tinkering tenets you touched upon. What did tenets did you hit in your 10 minutes of tinkering and which ones might have you missed? Why/why not?

Tinkering resources we love:

  • Brightworks school
  • Art of Tinkering book and the Exploratorium Tinkering Studio’s projects page & Instructables page
  • The Tinkering School’s past projects
