SUMMARY:Anti-Racist Education for Makers: Schema of Makers
DESCRIPTION:Ace is thrilled to introduce 4 workshops in October that explore how to be anti-racist in our maker communities. Working with an amazing peace activist and facilitator\, Emily Bowen\, these workshops have been crafted to be broadly relevant to the maker community and Ace Makerspace specifically. \nSchema of Makers\nSunday\, October 4th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |  Tickets \nWho defines what a legitimate maker is? Explore how different types of makers are valued and have influence in how the community is shaped. \nCommunities are like ecosystems — living things that change and evolve over time. We will unpack different maker identities and the dynamics of those identities and their influence on how our makerspace community has evolved… for good or for ill. This workshop will explore both what the identity of makers have been as well as explore what it could and should be. \nMaker Say What\nSunday\, October 11th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |   Tickets \nHow the language we use to share maker knowledge interacts with race. \nWhen it’s easy to lean into jargon as a way to communicate intelligence and experience\, one can quickly conflate the words we use with who belongs and who doesn’t. And when it comes to talking about issues of race and gender\, there is often a fear of saying the wrong thing. This workshop will explore how to be inclusive with Maker speak\, as well as how to avoid the pitfalls of inaction by the fear of talking about race imperfectly. \nTaking Care of the New Guy\nSunday\, October 18th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |   Tickets \nWhen the new guy isn’t white or a guy. We will explore where there is an opportunity to connect with people different than ourselves.  \nBlack people\, and other people of color as well as Indigenous individuals\, generally experience trauma because of microaggressions or just a lack of welcome in majority-white spaces. So to do female\, femme\, non-binary\, and gender-nonconforming folx in majority male spaces. How then do we take care of new individuals when they are not like us or having a much different experience in the world.  This workshop will leave participants with a checklist to do just that including positive accountability. \nYou’re Too Comfortable\nSunday\, October 25th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |   Tickets \nRecognizing when comfort is an indicator of white supremacy manifesting itself. Explore how to take action when it does. \nOne way whiteness protects itself is by eliminating stressors of those who are in proximity to it. Things are easier\, quicker\, more accessible\, more abundant\, less risky\, and more. This workshop will examine how comfortable you are and explore where your own discomfort might be putting up barriers to equity and inclusivity. Then we’ll talk about what can be done about it. We will uncover what actions can be taken when we discover white supremacy manifesting itself.

SUMMARY:Critical Reflections about Equity in Education with Dr. John B. King and Dr. Janice K. Jackson
DESCRIPTION:As students and educators begin a new school year amid the ongoing upheaval of the global pandemic and worldwide demonstrations against systemic racism\, essential questions about equity in education are taking center stage. \nPlease join us for our first conversation in a year-long series\, Facing History Now: Conversations on Equity and Justice\, with Dr. John B. King\, CEO of The Education Trust and former US Secretary of Education\, and Dr. Janice K. Jackson\, CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Drs. King and Jackson will discuss the role of education in this moment of national reckoning\, and the importance of civic agency in our classrooms. This couldn’t be better highlighted than in our unique partnership with Dr. Jackson and the Chicago Public School system\, where we are training all middle and high school social science teachers to teach three of our core case studies. \nDR. JOHN B. KING\nJohn B. King Jr. is the president and CEO of The Education Trust\, a national nonprofit organization that seeks to identify and close educational opportunity and achievement gaps. King served as U.S. Secretary of Education in the Obama administration. Prior to that role\, King carried out the duties of Deputy Secretary\, overseeing policies and programs related to P-12 education\, English learners\, special education\, innovation\, and agency operations. King joined the department following his post as New York State Education Commissioner. King began his career as a high school social studies teacher and middle school principal. \nDR. JANICE K. JACKSON\nAs a former student\, teacher\, principal\, network chief\, and chief education officer\, and now as chief executive officer\, Dr. Janice K. Jackson has been immersed in Chicago Public Schools her entire life. \nAs CEO of the third largest school district in the country\, Dr. Jackson is a forward-thinking educator who is focused on improving excellence\, equity\, and access to high-quality education in all CPS schools. Her efforts\, along with those of Chicago’s dedicated teachers and principals\, have propelled CPS students to record-breaking academic gains\, and education experts across the country regard Chicago as a national leader in urban education. \nA lifelong educator\, Dr. Jackson is committed to providing all schools with a clear framework for excellence. She holds a master’s degree in leadership and administration and a doctorate in urban school leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She resides in Chicago with her husband and two children\, both CPS students.

SUMMARY:Decolonizing Education and the Role of Restorative Justice in Schools
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is for educators looking at ways to understand the restorative justice movement and its role in education. While restorative justice has been used in various school settings\, it is critical that it is approached in an authentic and meaningful way that acknowledges the roots of the work and the practice. Too often education attempts to colonize restorative justice in the same way that education has been colonized. Through conversations with Restorative Justice leaders doing this work with a strong anti-racist lens and understanding of the movement\, this webinar will give educators an understanding of what restorative justice is really about and its impact on decolonizing education.

SUMMARY:CTE Mission: CubeSat [info session]
DESCRIPTION:Today\, we launched CTE Mission: CubeSat\, a national challenge to build technical skills for careers in space and beyond. The U.S. Department of Education invites high schools to bring space missions to students by designing and building CubeSat prototypes — in the classroom or at home. \nDesigning and building a CubeSat prototype in this multiphase challenge will offer students a firsthand opportunity to learn valuable technical skills — such as engineering\, computer science\, research\, logistics\, project management\, and marketing — that can be applied to careers in space and many other industries. \nCurated educational resources are available to students and teachers online in the CTE Mission: CubeSat resource hub. To learn more\, schools can join a virtual information session on September 1. The challenge team will discuss how CubeSats can be used as a tool for education\, present an in-depth overview of the challenge\, and answer questions.

SUMMARY:The First Ingredient: Rising to Meet Challenges to Relationships in Fall 2020
DESCRIPTION:What we have seen in our work at EXPLO Elevate over the last months has revealed the immediate\, and at times existential\, threats to critical school relationships. The justifiable stress accompanying significant decisions is too often chilling the relationships necessary to allow a school to preserve and deepen culture\, to serve students\, and to prepare for the future. Whether the issue lies in the organizational/managerial culture\, change management\, or classroom practice\, a sort of relationship metal fatigue threatens to weaken the ties that bind a school community together. In the webinar\, Ross Peters\, EXPLO Elevate’s Vice-President for School Strategy\, will provide context for the various threats to relationships and\, most importantly\, provide strategies both to remediate the challenges and move beyond them to create the good health our schools and classrooms will need to excel in the weeks and months ahead.

SUMMARY:Healing the Impact of Racial Injustice and Inequity: The Role of Afterschool
DESCRIPTION:Healing the Impact of Racial Injustice and Inequity: The Role of Afterschool \na Webinar with Dr. Shawn Ginwright \nThe COVID-19 pandemic and the long list of African Americans killed by police has laid bare the racial injustice and inequity in our society. We know that many adult staff and many of our youth participants in afterschool are people of color. In the wake of this turmoil\, how can we address the needs of our staff? How can we prepare staff and redesign our programs to promote racial healing? What is the best way to facilitate discussions of systemic racism? How is afterschool positioned for this? Should we urge/ support youth to engage in civic action? And\, is there a way to do some of this work remotely\, as programs may not re-open in the Fall? Dr. Ginwright will address some of these questions in his presentation and will be available to respond to participants’ questions. \nShawn Ginwright\, PhD is one of the nation’s leading innovators\, provocateurs\, and thought leaders on African American youth\, youth activism\, and youth development. He is Professor of Education in the Africana Studies Department and a Senior Research Associate at San Francisco State University. His research examines the ways in which youth in urban communities navigate through the constraints of poverty and struggle to create equality and justice in their schools and communities. \nDr. Ginwright is Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flourish Agenda\, Inc.\, a national nonprofit consulting firm\, whose mission is to design strategies that unlock the power of healing and engage youth of color and adult allies in transforming their schools and communities. \nIn 2011\, he was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Senior Specialist award from the State Department for his outstanding research and work with urban youth. Dr. Ginwright is the author of “Hope and Healing in Urban Education: How Activists and Teachers are Reclaiming Matters of the Heart”\, “Black in School- Afrocentric Reform\, Black Youth and the Promise of Hip-Hop Culture” and co-editor of” Beyond Resistance!: Youth Resistance and Community Change: New Democratic Possibilities for Practice and Policy for America’s Youth” and in 2010 he published “Black Youth Rising\, Activism and Radical Healing in Urban America”. Dr. Ginwright currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the California Endowment. \nHOST: Stu Semigran\, Educare Foundation\, will serve as the host for this webinar.

SUMMARY:Assessment for Good: Ethical\, Equitable\, and Justice-oriented Assessment Registration
DESCRIPTION:Educating for Good is pleased to announce its premiere virtual conference\, August 10-12\, 2020. The conference looks at foundational issues around assessment\, equity\, justice and ethics — particularly those raised by the lock down. Our circle conversations will have implications for assessment in the long term\, and also\, more importantly\, for the school year that is coming right at us. In support of “at any distance” learning\, we will model virtual facilitation of learning circles\, provide thought partnership around assessment system development\, and processes for the development competency based assessments. We will highlight thought leaders and practitioners in the work\, and lift up resources and colleagues who are educating for good. Most importantly\, we will provide a space for participants to learn from each other\, share their concerns and questions\, and untangle the most pressing dilemma of the pandemic: how to do the right thing for our kids. \nRegistrants can attend all circles\, one circle\, or one strand of circles. Circles are interactive and will include break out spaces. There is no fee for registration.

SUMMARY:Education Now: Practicing Antiracism in Your School
DESCRIPTION:The disparities that students face today\, magnified during the COVID-19 outbreak\, are rooted in systemic racism that has been ingrained in education for generations. But even as we reevaluate the system\, we must also recognize the critical impact of individual educators who are committed to the fight against racism and injustice. Educators — people — can help change and improve the system\, so that it supports and nurtures all young people. \nDuring this conversation\, we will identify how educators can act to confront racism and white supremacy in their everyday roles\, and what it means to embrace and work toward antiracism in your school setting. Tracie Jones\, HGSE’s Director of Diversity\, Inclusion\, and Belonging\, will be joined by HGSE’s Christina “V” Villarreal\, a longtime teacher and school leader in East Oakland\, CA\, who now directs the Teacher Education master’s program\, and José Vilson\, a math teacher\, writer\, and activist in New York City who is the executive director of EduColor. \nEducation Now: The Challenges of Reopening is a summer webinar series with insights for educators\, families\, and school and district leaders. This bi-weekly series runs Wednesdays\, June 24 through September 2. Episodes will be recorded and available to view later on YouTube and Facebook. Visit hgse.me/ednow for more information.
