DESCRIPTION:Ace is thrilled to introduce 4 workshops in October that explore how to be anti-racist in our maker communities. Working with an amazing peace activist and facilitator\, Emily Bowen\, these workshops have been crafted to be broadly relevant to the maker community and Ace Makerspace specifically. \nSchema of Makers\nSunday\, October 4th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |  Tickets \nWho defines what a legitimate maker is? Explore how different types of makers are valued and have influence in how the community is shaped. \nCommunities are like ecosystems — living things that change and evolve over time. We will unpack different maker identities and the dynamics of those identities and their influence on how our makerspace community has evolved… for good or for ill. This workshop will explore both what the identity of makers have been as well as explore what it could and should be. \nMaker Say What\nSunday\, October 11th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |   Tickets \nHow the language we use to share maker knowledge interacts with race. \nWhen it’s easy to lean into jargon as a way to communicate intelligence and experience\, one can quickly conflate the words we use with who belongs and who doesn’t. And when it comes to talking about issues of race and gender\, there is often a fear of saying the wrong thing. This workshop will explore how to be inclusive with Maker speak\, as well as how to avoid the pitfalls of inaction by the fear of talking about race imperfectly. \nTaking Care of the New Guy\nSunday\, October 18th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |   Tickets \nWhen the new guy isn’t white or a guy. We will explore where there is an opportunity to connect with people different than ourselves.  \nBlack people\, and other people of color as well as Indigenous individuals\, generally experience trauma because of microaggressions or just a lack of welcome in majority-white spaces. So to do female\, femme\, non-binary\, and gender-nonconforming folx in majority male spaces. How then do we take care of new individuals when they are not like us or having a much different experience in the world.  This workshop will leave participants with a checklist to do just that including positive accountability. \nYou’re Too Comfortable\nSunday\, October 25th  |   Noon – 1pm PST \n$5-20 sliding scale  |   Tickets \nRecognizing when comfort is an indicator of white supremacy manifesting itself. Explore how to take action when it does. \nOne way whiteness protects itself is by eliminating stressors of those who are in proximity to it. Things are easier\, quicker\, more accessible\, more abundant\, less risky\, and more. This workshop will examine how comfortable you are and explore where your own discomfort might be putting up barriers to equity and inclusivity. Then we’ll talk about what can be done about it. We will uncover what actions can be taken when we discover white supremacy manifesting itself.

Throughout the discussion we will learn more about the origins of the film\, the important struggles and strides of women in STEM\, and connections between film making and STEM. \nAll registrants will receive a secure link for 72-hour access to view the film prior to the webinar. King\, CEO of The Education Trust and former US Secretary of Education\, and Dr. Janice K. Jackson\, CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Drs. King and Jackson will discuss the role of education in this moment of national reckoning\, and the importance of civic agency in our classrooms. This couldn’t be better highlighted than in our unique partnership with Dr. Jackson and the Chicago Public School system\, where we are training all middle and high school social science teachers to teach three of our core case studies. \nDR. JOHN B. KING\nJohn B. King Jr. is the president and CEO of The Education Trust\, a national nonprofit organization that seeks to identify and close educational opportunity and achievement gaps. King served as U.S. Secretary of Education in the Obama administration. Prior to that role\, King carried out the duties of Deputy Secretary\, overseeing policies and programs related to P-12 education\, English learners\, special education\, innovation\, and agency operations. King joined the department following his post as New York State Education Commissioner. King began his career as a high school social studies teacher and middle school principal. \nDR. JANICE K. JACKSON\nAs a former student\, teacher\, principal\, network chief\, and chief education officer\, and now as chief executive officer\, Dr. Janice K. Jackson has been immersed in Chicago Public Schools her entire life. \nAs CEO of the third largest school district in the country\, Dr. Jackson is a forward-thinking educator who is focused on improving excellence\, equity\, and access to high-quality education in all CPS schools. Her efforts\, along with those of Chicago’s dedicated teachers and principals\, have propelled CPS students to record-breaking academic gains\, and education experts across the country regard Chicago as a national leader in urban education. \nA lifelong educator\, Dr. Jackson is committed to providing all schools with a clear framework for excellence. She holds a master’s degree in leadership and administration and a doctorate in urban school leadership from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She resides in Chicago with her husband and two children\, both CPS students.

Whether the issue lies in the organizational/managerial culture\, change management\, or classroom practice\, a sort of relationship metal fatigue threatens to weaken the ties that bind a school community together. In the webinar\, Ross Peters\, EXPLO Elevate’s Vice-President for School Strategy\, will provide context for the various threats to relationships and\, most importantly\, provide strategies both to remediate the challenges and move beyond them to create the good health our schools and classrooms will need to excel in the weeks and months ahead.
