SUMMARY:Shapes in Nature (Part 2) - Learning in the Making: LIVE!
DESCRIPTION:Learning in the Making: LIVE! Join Maker Ed for “Shapes in Nature\, Part 2” on May 13 at 1:00 PM PST at bit.ly/MakerEdLIVE \nEach week we are collecting and curating resources around a topic and the next two weeks are about structural engineering—buildings constructed by animals (May 6) and humans (May 11)! \nJoin us in Learning in the Making: LIVE! This will be a two part series with special guest educators from the Lawrence Hall of Science! \nPart Two on May 13: Design It\, Build It with Newspaper Dowels \nAfter exploring shapes in nature to build a shelter\, we will continue using newspaper dowels to explore strength and stability while building structures. Is a single piece of paper strong enough to hold up a water bottle? Which shapes provide the most strength and stability in different structures? Join us next week to explore these ideas—using newspaper\, tape\, and your creativity! Have fun with principles of engineering\, physics\, and geometry as you design and build sturdy structures and other cool creations. \nTo make newspaper dowels\, use these simple directions or watch this short video. Materials you will need: \n\nNewspaper (other options: paper\, magazines or catalogs)\nTape (scotch or masking)\nDrinking Straws (other options: wooden dowels\, round chopsticks\, markers\, pencils)\n\nVisit our blog at makered.org/blog for more inspiration\, resources\, and project guides! SUMMARY:Strategic Technology Planning: Aligning Priorities\, Costs\, Outcomes and Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Jeanne Barker\, Director of Schools\, Lenoir City School System\, TN; Dr. Chris Gaines\, Superintendent\, Mehlville School District\, MO; and Dr. Randy Ziegenfuss\, Superintendent\, Salisbury Township School District\, PA \nProgram Host and Moderator: Ann McMullan\, Project Director\, CoSN Empowered Superintendents Initiative \nSponsored by ClassLink\nThis edWebinar series is co-hosted by CoSN and edWeb.net \nOver 50% of U.S. school districts and about one third of all public schools in the nation are located in rural areas. Successfully leading digital transformations within rural school districts has a tremendous impact on our nation as a whole. \nTechnology planning and investments can typically be quite complicated. Often the challenges begin almost from the moment a district begins to consider next steps in a comprehensive technology plan. With tight budgets and multiple stakeholders involved\, each with valid concerns\, along with the constant evolution of technology tools and resources\, a framework for evaluating technology initiatives and guidelines for arriving at well-supported decisions are more important than ever before. \nJoin this edWebinar with three tech-savvy superintendents\, from three different states\, as they share how they lead their districts in creating technology plans that align priorities\, costs\, and outcomes and also assure that the ability to sustain technology initiatives over time is part of the planning process. Each superintendent will explain their strategies and impart their expertise on the total cost of ownership\, student outcomes\, budget management\, and the value of investment. Tools and resources to evaluate\, rethink and strengthen technology planning and decision making will be shared. \nGiven the current challenges involved with the efforts to continue teaching and learning in the midst of multiple school closures\, the issues involved in school districts’ strategic technology planning are now more urgent and relevant than ever. Our three superintendents share strategies they have implemented to lead learning for all students in their school districts during these most unprecedented and complex times. \nThis edWebinar will be of particular value to school superintendents\, K-12 school and district leaders\, and aspiring leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

SUMMARY:Don't Look Away: Embracing Anti-Bias Classrooms
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Iheoma U. Iruka\, Ph.D.\, Chief Research Innovation Officer & Director\, HighScope Educational Research Foundation; Stephanie Curenton\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor\, Boston University; and Kerry-Ann Escayg\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Professor\, University of Nebraska at Omaha \nSponsored by Gryphon House \nIn this edWebinar\, the lead authors of the newly released book\, Don’t Look Away: Embracing Anti-Bias Classrooms\, call all early education professionals to lean in as “sheroes” and “heroes” in the lives of children; early educators are potential change agents in children’s and families’ lives. The goal of this edWebinar is to ensure that participants understand and embrace anti-bias and anti-racist teaching approaches by creating affirming culturally-rich classroom environments that protect children from psychological trauma and heals them from the inside out. Viewers will learn how institutional racism is visited in the early childhood space and the roles of implicit bias\, microaggression\, and white privilege in undermining the excellence and learning of minoritized Black and brown children and those who teach them. Viewers will be armored with tools and strategies\, but most importantly\, partners in the fight to ensure that we deliver on the promise of education especially for those who helped to build it. \nThis recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK through elementary teachers\, school and district leaders\, coaches\, trainers\, and childcare providers\, owners\, and administrators.
