SUMMARY:Cultivating Genius Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Let’s engage\, discuss and connect together around the inherent brilliance in all youth as we read Cultivating Genius by Gholdy Muhammad!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nJoin us this month in reading Cultivating Genius by Gholdy Muhammad! We’ll discuss how this equity framework centers the pursuits of identity\, intellect\, skills\, criticality\, and the inherent brilliance in all youth. Connect with other educators to reimagine your own lessons and teaching practices to be more hands on and learner centered using this framework! \nDiscussion questions will be provided throughout the month of June via email and on our social media as we read through the book\, so feel free to join in on the conversation in the weeks leading up to this book club meeting! \n\nTwitter: @makeredorg\nInstagram: @makeredorg\nFacebook: @MakerEducationInitiative\n\nThis is a participatory space for educators to connect\, learn\, and grow with each other. \nThis meetup is free and open to ALL educators who work with young people in any capacity. \nNote: Throughout the month of June\, we’ll also be hosting events and workshops that connect to the book and framework. Check back on our event brite page http://maker-ed.eventbrite.com to learn more!

SUMMARY:Making as Healing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” – Audre Lorde\n \nOakland educators\, are you looking for ways to revive\, restore\, and reset as you move into summer? We invite you to join us for a day-long retreat exploring the healing possibilities of maker-centered learning. \nAs educators\, we have faced some of the most difficult teaching circumstances in recent memory. We are helping young people move through a challenging and transformative time all while living through it ourselves. Many of us are finding that our old tools are no longer supporting this new environment. \nJoin Maker Ed and Agency by Design Oakland in this day-long workshop where we will create a space for educators to come together\, practice individual and collective healing practices through making\, and center community\, care\, and connection. We will explore how maker-centered learning can be a tool for healing in our learning spaces\, to create a culture of care for our learners\, and to cultivate the conditions for empathy\, vulnerability\, joy\, and rest. \n“We don’t heal in isolation\, but in community.” – S. Kelley Harrell \n \nJoin us!\nDate: Saturday\, June 4\, 2022\nTime: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm\nCost: Free!\nFood: Breakfast\, snacks\, and lunch will be provided\nLocation: Maker Ed Community Studio\, 1808 5th St\, Berkeley CA 94710 \nDue to limited space and COVID-19 protocol\,* we have a maximum capacity of 45 people for this event. We ask that all attendees only register if they are sure they can attend. Oakland educators have priority for this event & if space becomes available\, others are welcome as well. \n*A note about our COVID-19 protocols: For all events\, our basic policy is that masks should be worn inside and we require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. Masks can be removed when outside and eating. Please do not attend if you are symptomatic. The intention of this policy is that it is designed to ensure that folks in our community who are the most vulnerable (immunocompromised\, young children\, folks who are caretakers of elderly\, etc.) can participate safely. \nRegister now by May 27th!
