SUMMARY:Exploring Identity through Literature
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a hands-on workshop to explore textual lineages and their use as a tool to better understand the young learners in your life.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nDo you remember the first time you saw yourself represented in a piece of writing? How did that representation make you feel? Happy\, sad\, seen\, embarrassed\, incomplete — or maybe something else? As educators\, we each bring our own unique experiences and histories into classrooms and makerspaces — and so do our students. \nMany things can shape our identities over time. Your identity isn’t just who you are\, it’s also shaped by how others see you\, who you want to be in the future\, your hobbies and interests\, your family history\, and where you live and grow up. \nIn this workshop\, we will explore the many layered meanings and origins of our identities\, practice some self-reflection\, and plan/prototype some different ways to get to know youth learners through textual lineages\, and reading and writing. \nWho is this workshop for? \n\nTeachers/educators specializing in English Language Arts\,\nEducators working with English-language Learners\,\nWriting tutors\,\nYouth librarians\,\nAnyone who loves to read or is learning to love reading\n\nOur approach: Our workshops aim to immerse educators in the experience of learners. No lecturing here — you can expect to be engaged in hands-on\, minds-on activities and interactive discussions for the full duration of the workshop. We’ll support you as you reflect on your practice as an educator\, learn and collaborate with other participants\, and stretch your teaching in new directions. \nPre-session work: We will be connecting our reflections in this workshop to Cultivating Genius: An Equity Framework for Culturally and Historically Responsive Literacy by Dr. Gholdy Muhammad. You don’t need to read the book to attend! In addition to this 2 hr workshop\, there will be 30 minutes of pre-session work which will be emailed to you after you sign up. \nInterested in diving more deeply into this framework? Join our Cultivating Genius Book Club discussion on June 25 to discuss this book more. RSVP here makeredbookclub.eventbrite.com.

SUMMARY:Making as Healing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” – Audre Lorde\n \nOakland educators\, are you looking for ways to revive\, restore\, and reset as you move into summer? We invite you to join us for a day-long retreat exploring the healing possibilities of maker-centered learning. \nAs educators\, we have faced some of the most difficult teaching circumstances in recent memory. We are helping young people move through a challenging and transformative time all while living through it ourselves. Many of us are finding that our old tools are no longer supporting this new environment. \nJoin Maker Ed and Agency by Design Oakland in this day-long workshop where we will create a space for educators to come together\, practice individual and collective healing practices through making\, and center community\, care\, and connection. We will explore how maker-centered learning can be a tool for healing in our learning spaces\, to create a culture of care for our learners\, and to cultivate the conditions for empathy\, vulnerability\, joy\, and rest. \n“We don’t heal in isolation\, but in community.” – S. Kelley Harrell \n \nJoin us!\nDate: Saturday\, June 4\, 2022\nTime: 9:00 am – 3:30 pm\nCost: Free!\nFood: Breakfast\, snacks\, and lunch will be provided\nLocation: Maker Ed Community Studio\, 1808 5th St\, Berkeley CA 94710 \nDue to limited space and COVID-19 protocol\,* we have a maximum capacity of 45 people for this event. We ask that all attendees only register if they are sure they can attend. Oakland educators have priority for this event & if space becomes available\, others are welcome as well. \n*A note about our COVID-19 protocols: For all events\, our basic policy is that masks should be worn inside and we require proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. Masks can be removed when outside and eating. Please do not attend if you are symptomatic. The intention of this policy is that it is designed to ensure that folks in our community who are the most vulnerable (immunocompromised\, young children\, folks who are caretakers of elderly\, etc.) can participate safely. \nRegister now by May 27th!
