Maker Ed is excited to welcome ReCreate as a Maker Corps Host Site in 2015. For the third year of Maker Corps, Maker Ed will collaborate with more than forty organizations to host Maker Corps Members throughout the summer to bring maker activities and approaches to the communities that they serve.

Below is a glimpse into what Maker Corps will look like at ReCreate in 2015.  Click here to learn more about becoming a Maker Corps Member at ReCreate.

ReCreate & Maker Corps 2015

At ReCreate we are so proud and excited to have been selected as a Maker Corps Host Site this year! Over the past several years we have worked hard to encourage people to rethink their notion of trash, and to embrace making through creative reuse.  This summer we will be launching our FULL STEAM AHEAD – Maker Lab.

ReCreate has been committed to reducing waste in our community—and inspiring others to do the same—through art, education, and imagination since 2009.   With this new venture – our goal is continue to inspire creativity, tinkering and hands-on problem solving by using our reuse materials in conjunction with some nifty new additions.  Think of it as a Maker and Creative Reuse mash-up.  We will be holding Maker Lab  camps and drop in workshops both at our ReCreate Eco-Art Center in Roseville, and around the region offering Mobile Maker events.

Maker Camps this summer:

  • Maker Camp – Secret Agent Spy
Become a secret agent  and take an exciting trip into the world of detection, deception, collection and forensics.  Engineer your own spy gadgets and communication devices.  Work in teams on spy missions to gain the title of Master Spy.
  • Maker Camp – Circuits and Robotics
Make and program your own gadgets.  Learn about the forces of positive and negative with squishy circuits, LED Throwies and more.   Help make a larger than life moveable cardboard robot, and make your two of your own “bots” that you get to keep!
  • Maker Camp – Textiles and Fiber
Learn sewing basics, both by hand and with sewing machines.  Make a stuffed animal, pillow, bag and more.  This camp will also include high tech sewing – adding lights to a project.  Weaving and Felting will also be included in the camp projects.  Please Note:  This camp is designed for both girls and boys.
  • Maker Camp – The Great Cardboard Challenge
Did you ever see the video about that kid Caine who built a whole arcade out of cardboard?  At Recreate, we also believe you can create anything you can imagine with some cardboard, doodads and tape.  Join us for a wild cardboard building week of fun.  We have a few tricks up our sleeves to teach you how to become a Cardboard Master!

Our Maker camps are geared toward 3rd through 7th grade students.   We will showcase the amazing work of our campers at the end of each week – with a Maker Extravaganza for parents to see the genius of their children’s work.

In addition to these camps, we will have drop-in Maker programs in the community – workshops where kids can try their hand at a variety of Maker projects. This will be our opportunity to insure that Maker projects are accessible to any aspiring young maker in our region.

Who we are looking for:
Maker Corps Members who work with ReCreate will work closely with our team to implement daily activities related to our themes for Maker Camp as well as help us to test and try projects for our Full STEAM Ahead school program – which we are working to launch in the Fall. Enthusiastic and creative Maker Corps Members will help plan and supervise the hands on activity of kids in our camps.  Camps will run Monday through Friday. Maker Corps Members will have ample time to work on their own maker projects throughout the summer with access to the tools and materials.

Between our camps we have non-programming time when the team will have time to work together to plan activities for the upcoming camps and explore new topics that could be implemented in future programs. During these weeks, Maker Corps Members will help to shape the curriculum, brainstorm activities, and create new projects.

For us, an ideal maker is someone who is enthusiastic, likes to share knowledge and has a deep curiosity for trying something new.  We are seeking Maker Corps Members who love technology, art, and are always looking for a better way to do things.

Our goal is for our Maker Corps Members to have a resume building experience when they spend their summer with us, by creating a series of maker projects,   and by helping us build the interest in the Maker Movement here in Roseville, while launching our Full STEAM Ahead program.
